How to Put the Glam into Camping at Paws Up

glamping Paws Up

Luxury camping at The Resort at Paws Up is nature served on a gleaming silver platter. Known as North America’s premier glamping destination, The Resort at Paws Up features five luxe tented camps that cater to families, couples and groups. Each safari-style tent features fine linens, comfortable beds, chic rustic furnishings, art-adorned walls, electricity, air-conditioning, heat and—most importantly—a camping butler at your beck and call. Learn from our Resort Manager, Charles Daenen, and our Glamping Operations Manager, Eddie Young, how we turned old-fashioned camping into glorified glamping.

Glamping Paws Up

1. What are the necessities to “glamp” up a camping experience?

Charles: Be flexible. You are not checking into a five-star suite with a 50-inch television and a minibar, but you are getting ready for an experience of a lifetime.

Eddie: Lots of s’mores, a sturdy pair of boots and a mind that’s open to new and fun experiences.

2. What’s the funniest request you’ve received from a guest?

Charles: I was once asked to sing happy birthday in my native language—Dutch—and it sounded awful, as I cannot sing. But I made the entire group laugh.

Eddie: A guest once asked me to remove ants from a tent, without harming them. (All ants were safely removed.)

3. What about a guest’s most unique request?

Charles: A guest wanted to have one of our ponies come to a camp and stay next to her child’s bed inside the tent until she fell asleep.

Eddie: I had a guest who wanted me to try to get an elk close enough to touch.

glamping tents Paws Up

4. What necessities should a guest bring to Paws Up glamping tents?

Charles: An open-minded attitude. You are going to experience a vacation like nothing you’ve done before.

Eddie: The tents have pretty much everything you could need, and if they don’t, we can get it for you.

5. What is the most unique aspect of Paws Up?

Charles: There are actually two things that make the glamping adventure unique: the location and the willingness of the staff to go the extra mile time after time. If one of those two things was missing, it just would not be the same experience.

Eddie: Our employees at Paws Up are special. They are friendly, genuine and passionate about giving our guests a great glamping experience.

6. Where is your personal ultimate favorite place to camp?

Charles: The deck of Cliffside Camp early in the morning, drinking coffee and watch the sunrise while eagles soar above the Blackfoot River looking for breakfast.

Eddie: All camps have features that make them individual, and I can honestly make a case for each being my favorite. Moonlight Camp has a special place in my heart, as it was the first camp I worked. It has the true feel of camping, being out in the open meadow and away from most of The Resort, so you definitely feel like you’ve stolen away.

7. If you could tell guests one thing before they visit Paws Up, what would it be?

Charles: Do not hesitate to ask us anything, no matter how crazy your request is. We want to know what you like, but we are also really good at anticipating your needs.

Eddie: Be prepared to get dirty! Whether you are on ATVs, horseback riding or sitting around the campfire, it’s the great outdoors, so—naturally—it can be dusty and dirty. A good pair of old jeans is sufficient here, as we don’t want to ruin your good pair.

8. What’s the one thing you see guests most often forget to pack?

Charles: Sunscreen.

Eddie: A cowboy hat. If you don’t have one, don’t worry. We have a huge selection of hats in the Wilderness Outpost, and you will be feeling country in no time!

9. If you could have one famous camper come stay at the ranch, who would it be?

Charles: Bear Grylls—I’d love to have him run a wilderness workshop.

Eddie: Louis L’Amour. I grew up reading my dad’s old books while we were camping, and he was by far my favorite storyteller. I would love to sit around the crackling fire as he told stories of the Old West, gun-slinging cowboys, outlaws and bandits that would keep me intrigued for hours.

10. How did you become a camping butler?

Charles: I am too old for that now, but if I—just like Cher—could turn back time, this would have been my favorite summer job. Most of our butlers are referrals from other employees.

Eddie: I started working at the Resort as a summer job during college, and it has easily become one of my favorite jobs I have ever held. Being outdoors and helping guests enjoy themselves while glamping is a fun and challenging job, but it is highly rewarding when you see the smiles and continually have guests who don’t want to leave at the end of their stays!

Glamping with the Page Family

A milestone like a 75th birthday requires a special celebration. Kelly Page did just that when her Dad turned 75 and at his request to visit a “dude ranch” they came to Paws Up.

“My dad, and for that matter, most of the family, are not real campers. “Roughing it,” well, isn’t a phrase any of us likes uttering when it comes to traveling. Finding the perfect dude ranch with enough amenities to keep everyone happy seemed like a challenge. Sure we wanted an authentic experience wrangling cattle and shooting clay pigeons, but we also wanted to be able to retire to high thread count sheets and gourmet food and drinks. A lot to ask, until we found Paws Up.

“Everyone from 11 to 75 years old enjoyed themselves at Paws Up. It was one of our best family vacations. We were semi-disconnected, but fully connected while taking in the beautiful setting through a variety of adventure activities. […]”

This is a condensed version of their experience. Head on over to the Tasting Page to read her full review and travel experience.

Fashion by Mayhem visits Paws Up

The following is an excerpt from “Thumbs Up for Paws Up” originally published on the FashionbyMayhem.com blog:

Photo: Fashion by Mayhem

Our first two nights in Montana were spent glamping at the 37,000 acre ranch resort known as The Resort at Paws Up. Now if you’re wondering what exactly glamping is, it’s like camping, except your tent has a king size bed with heated blankets,  a second bedroom, a REAL bathroom complete with rain shower and heated floors,  a welcome bottle of wine, a heating/AC unit inside, and lots of other perfect details … So basically, it’s not camping at all. Which is exactly how I like my camping.

Photo: Fashion by Mayhem

[…] We decided to spend our time at Paws Up reacquainting ourselves with the great outdoors. Mayhem grabbed a fishing pole from the dining and activities pavilion at our camp and we made the short 100 yard trek to the Blackfoot River.  We didn’t catch anything. At all. And it’s entirely possible it had something to do with the super loud kid with us who kept throwing rocks in the river. We tried to explain fishing basics to her, but she was having fun and we were enjoying ourselves, so it was all good.

[…] And in case we weren’t wowed enough by our surroundings, we discovered on our first morning that we had some bald friends in camp with us.  And later that day we found they had a nest directly above our tent. And two babies. Let me let that sink in … a family of bald eagles living in the tree directly above our tent!!!

[…]Nature is pretty darn spectacular and we don’t spend enough time appreciating it. We’ve worried about Mayhem growing up in a time and place where we’re all so wrapped up in our devices and screens that we neglect the awesomeness that’s happens in the world all on its own. Paws Up gave us gave us a little slice of heaven for a couple days. And the chance to immerse ourselves in some of nature’s finest settings in five star fashion.

One Resort, Two Vacations

One Resort, Two Vacations

Add dynamic to your next vacation! Outdoors in our 37,000 acres at Paws Up means a range of activities that can leave the family exhausted long before the options are. We’ve got you covered no matter the adventure you’re seeking, and that extends to our accommodations as well!

The Resort at Paws Up can be two vacations in one by combining the ease of living through indoor luxury with roughing-it-like-royalty glamping. Every feature of Paws Up pays tribute the rustic wilderness of “The Last Best Place” that is Montana without losing touch with your favorite creature comforts. Your private luxury vacation home is cozy with the best of modern amenities. Campgrounds bring a whole new interpretation to the Montana ‘Dude Ranch’ with their own camp butlers and chefs. You and yours can get the most out of your next vacation by experiencing both: starting in a home-away-from-home and then glamour camping beneath the ‘Big Sky’.

When choosing your vacation home we take into account your group size and vacation type. Extended family, reunion, or group get-together? We recommend our expansive Wilderness Estates. For smaller families or couples looking for privacy, perhaps Big Timber Homes or Meadow Homes are your ideal for isolated peace. Need more room without being broken up? For larger groups or company retreats, the historic Morris Ranch House or Blackfoot Lodge can cater to your spacious needs while also providing a true Montana experience. Luxury Homes at glance offer 2-4 bedrooms inside each home to accommodate up to 4-8 guests each. Majestic views, porches with six-person hot tubs, chef quality kitchens, luxury bed and baths, access to the wi-fi and satellite TV (should you choose it), complimentary transportation – all of these and more are made available to our vacation home guests.

Both the Morris Ranch House and Blackfoot Lodge offer a private luxury tent in their backyard. Selected Big Timber and Wilderness Estate homes offer this unique feature as well! Outfitted with lighting, a set of comfy beds, lounge furniture, toys and games, the luxury tents add a perfect adventure for kids and adults alike. Our permanent tents set you comfortably in the center of nature and beneath truly stunning nighttime views.

In fact, you may find that you’d like to spend the daytime in our safari-styled tents as well. Our ‘one resort two vacations’ option gives one week of Paws Up excitement with 4 days in a luxury home and 3 days glamping at our luxury camps. The variety enriches vacation memories, which last long after you leave the ranch. A camp butler attends to your every need and the chef creates high quality food with the freshest ingredients transformed through rustic cuisine style. Roast s’mores and sip wine beneath the ‘Big Sky’. The Resort at Paws Up is Montana’s premiere glamping site – enjoy fine linens, The Last Best Bed®, chic furnishings, art adorned walls, electricity, cooling fan and heat. Not to mention the private master bathrooms with rain shower, jetted tub, heated floors and indulgent organic spa products!

Where We’re Going Glamping

For many people, the term “camping” conjures images of dirty sleeping bags, flimsy tents that provide little protection from the elements and more insects than all the bug spray in the world could handle. But experiencing the great outdoors can be a very comfortable and, dare we say, luxurious experience.

The Resort at Paws Up, Greenough, Montana

Simply mention Montana and most people envision sweeping vistas and rugged landscapes. And The Resort at Paws Up certainly encompasses that pioneer-esque imagery, but it also throws in an element of undeniable opulence. Currently, there are four luxury camps to choose from here—there’s the Moonlight, Creekside, Pinnacle and River—each featuring views and characteristics all their own. In June, the newest luxury camp, Cliffside Camp, will join the roster. Resting on the banks of the Blackfoot River (the setting for the Norman Maclean novella A River Runs Through It), Cliffside Camp features four two-bedroom tent suites and two one-bedroom honeymoon tents, each as luxuriously rustic as the next. Every suite has in-room bathrooms (no dirt holes on this camping trip), air conditioning, and a camp butler and chef.

The Most Private and Exclusive Guest Experience in Montana

The Resort at Paws Up offers the most private and exclusive guest experience in Montana. There is no main lodge. There are no room numbers or hallways. Instead, our guests can stay in a luxury ranch home or glamping tent, nestled within a forest of tall timbers that overlook rolling meadows, majestic rivers, pastoral creeks and panoramic mountainscapes.

Paws Up offers 28  Montana vacation homes, each impeccably appointed in an unrivaled tapestry of rustic elegance and each located on its own private lot.  The expansive Wilderness Estates are perfect for Montana family reunions and groups. The Big Timber Homes and Meadow Homes make an ideal refuge for smaller families and couples on a quest for privacy. For a true Montana experience, stay in our historic Morris Ranch House or Blackfoot River Lodge – idyllically situated on the banks of the legendary Blackfoot River. All accommodations blend western-chic decor with a litany of amenities including kitchens, hot tubs, personal transportation, flat-screen TVs with DVD players, high-speed wireless Internet, laundry and more.

Top 10 Coolest Glamping Honeymoons

A great article by Uschi & Kay about the glamping trend and the coolest glamping honeymoon destinations.  They included Paws Up in their list.  Here’s what they had to say.

Location: Greenough, MT
Price: From $1075/per night (includes all meals)

As one of America’s top glamping resorts, I couldn’t do a glamping round up without including Paws Up, now could I?  If you want a luxurious glamping experience in the truest sense of the word then Paws Up is the place for you. With a camp butler, heated washroom floors, and king sized feather beds, this is glamorous camping at its finest. And to make the experience at Paws Up truly decadent, a visit to the tented Spa Town is a must.

Adventure served just the way we like it…

Gordon J.B. MacGeachy

“The first time I heard about Paws Up, it was from a client back in 2006 and she wasn’t someone who would ever be interested in anything that looked like camping. She was very wealthy, controlling, and wanted to celebrate the fact that she had just got her two sons and grandchildren “back” after successfully managing two divorces and getting rid of the daughter-in-laws that she just couldn’t stand. Not being one to argue we sent them to Paws Up, and although I thought she would hate it, she absolutely loved it, and told me that she couldn’t wait for her sons to marry again so she she could plan another two divorces..!”

Neither rain, nor snow, nor sleet…

Mother Nature can’t slow down the construction at Cliffside Camp, our newest and most luxurious glamping experience opening in June.  This spectacular view is from the front deck of one of two “honeymoon tents” that will be available at Cliffside Camp.  Sweetening the view is our lovely reservations team (from left): Jessica, Sheena, Tira and Nicole.  Each stands at the ready to tell you more about Cliffside Camp and to help you plan the vacation of a lifetime at Montana’s premier luxury ranch resort.
